Most people accept excess tension or muscle strain as a natural outcome of their busy lives. But we don't need to accept it. The Alexander Technique is a gentle hands-on process, aimed at improving postural balance and body alignment. It is valuable for those in a wide range of professions, from dancers and athletes to musicians and computer operators. Alexander's principles will be discussed, observed, and practically applied to everyday activities such as walking, standing, sitting, and working out. You will practice releasing tension as you stretch, move, and tone while also avoiding common pitfalls like demanding the wrong set of muscles to perform a specific movement, using your joints incorrectly or not using them enough, holding instead of releasing into a pose or movement, and forcing a stretch instead of easing into it. Please wear comfortable clothing, and bring an exercise mat to class.

THAI YOGA WORKSHOP

Where: Brookline
Cost: To be announced

In this workshop, Cecile demonstrates how a Thai Yoga session goes and gives participants a chance to experience it first hand. The practice is done in groups of two. Thai Yoga is a form of partner yoga. For most yoga postures the receiver is being supported by the floor or by the giver's hands hence Thai Yoga being referred to as "Lazy men's Yoga". Instrumental music is usually played in the background to help calm the mind and center the body.

Palming and thumbing the energy lines of the body is one dimension of the work. Stretching muscles and releasing joints is another dimension. It helps receivers expand their comfort zone in a safe and relaxing environment if they are interested in this aspect of the work or it can be mainly a soothing experience where the whole self feels very nurtured!

Cecile Raynor has been training with Ariela Grodner, herself trained by Kam Thye Chow from the Lotus Palm School in Montreal (www.lotuspalm.com). She is currently teaching classes through the Brookline Adult Ed including a class on Thai Yoga for Partners

Thai yoga, is an ancient healing art created by the Buddha's physician, in which a partner guides the other in stretching, joint mobilization, energy balancing, rhythmic deep tissue compression, soft tissue manipulation, and meditative breathing techniques. Yoga postures relieve muscular tension, improve circulation, boost the immune system, and balance the natural flow of energy in the body. Unlike doing yoga on your own, in this course your partner will learn how to help you go deeper into poses by gently aiding your movements, helping you make subtle adjustments, and tracking your progress. Both partners will get a chance to be the practitioner and the receiver. No experience is necessary. Students should be comfortable sitting or kneeling on the floor. Please bring a yoga mat to class.

MEDITATION CLASS WITH ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE SUPPORT

Date: Call to find out about the next session
Location:To be announced
Time: 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM
Fee: Drop ins $20,  $75 for 4 Tuesdays

This class gives you the opportunity to practice meditation while learning how to sit comfortably and handle meditation challenges using the Alexander Technique. The Introductory Workshop to the Alexander Technique is a requirement for this class.

Meditation is one of the hardest activities to do for most people and yet it is the most beneficial one because it affects the quality of performance of any other activity we perform. It teaches us to respond to life rather than react to it by developing mindfulness, the art of being present to what we do while we do it instead of being caught in the whirlwind of the monkey mind!

This class can equally help beginning and experienced practitioners. It is an opportunity to experience "beginners' mind" and gain a fresh look at the meditation experience.
